343's Published Latency Formula — And Why Spartan Speed Makes It Matter

In a rare move for the industry, 343 Industries publicly shared the actual formula behind Halo Infinite's hit registration delay: Shooter's Latency to Server, plus Shooter's Command Buffer, plus Server Processing Time (16-33ms depending on tick rate), plus the Target's Latency from the Server. They also explained why this matters more in Halo than some shooters — a Spartan sprinting at full speed moves roughly 8.5 meters per second, and grappling hook movement can spike that to around 24 meters per second, meaning even small delays translate into a Spartan covering meaningful real distance before the server catches up. This is also why 343 runs 4v4 matches at 60Hz but drops Big Team Battle and campaign co-op to 30Hz — more players and objects on screen means more processing per tick, and the studio made a deliberate tradeoff to keep larger modes stable rather than push tick rate uniformly high everywhere.
