Good Internet Speed for a Home Security System — ADT, Ring Alarm, and SimpliSafe
Choose internet capacity around the cameras that upload together, and verify alarm monitoring and outage backup separately. A single download-speed number cannot establish whether a whole security system will work. The exact hub, cameras, monitoring plan, cellular coverage and power arrangements all matter.
Run the internet speed test for a browser baseline. This is not an alarm test, a camera inspection or confirmation that a monitoring centre can receive an event.
Separate the Parts of the System
| Component or task | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Cloud camera recording and remote viewing | Each active stream’s upload requirement, recording mode and data allowance. |
| Local recorder or storage | The actual camera-to-recorder route, recording settings and what remote access needs. |
| Alarm hub, sensors and monitoring | The manufacturer’s supported communication path and the monitoring features enabled on your plan. |
| Internet outage | Whether backup carries alarm signals only or also provides internet to cameras and other devices. |
| Power outage | Which devices remain powered and which functions continue, for your exact installation. |
For camera planning, enter your stream-rate, simultaneous-use and recording-time assumptions in the security camera bandwidth calculator. It estimates bandwidth and data use; it does not certify monitoring, power backup or security coverage. Our surveillance guide explains the separate recorder and remote-viewing tasks.
Does a Home Security System Work Without Internet?
It depends on the system and service. Confirm the following details with your provider instead of assuming that cellular backup keeps every camera online:
- Ring Alarm Pro: Ring distinguishes Alarm Cellular Backup from 24/7 Backup Internet. The former carries alarm alerts rather than providing general internet. Backup Internet requires a compatible subscription and connected devices on the Alarm Pro eero network; Ring specifies Power Packs for this feature during a power outage. Included data limits and extra-data choices also apply.
- SimpliSafe: Its power and Wi-Fi outage guide describes a Base Station battery lasting up to 24 hours and cellular operation with a professional monitoring plan. That is Base Station guidance, not a promise of 24 hours of Wi-Fi camera recording. The guide also describes reduced controls during a power outage.
- ADT: ADT’s severe-weather guide describes different battery arrangements across system families and warns that communication can be affected if networking equipment lacks backup power. Confirm the requirements for your installed system and service.
These examples were checked against provider documentation on 22 October 2026. Plan availability, equipment and coverage differ by country; check the current terms for your address.
Check Cameras and Power Separately
A working alarm hub does not establish that a camera remains powered, records locally, uploads clips or supports remote viewing. Google’s Nest storage guide, for example, limits offline event storage to listed powered models and explains that devices cannot record once fully powered off.
- List the exact hub, cameras, recorder, modem and router, plus the services each uses.
- Check the manufacturer’s current outage instructions and your monitoring plan. Ask the provider how to verify communications using its supported test procedure.
- Use the camera’s documented recording or connection requirements to plan upload capacity. Compare available upload under representative household use.
- Check separate power arrangements and runtime documentation for each component. A hub battery does not supply power to every other device.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a home security system work during power outages?
Some functions may continue when the necessary equipment, battery and service are present. Check your exact model and monitoring plan. Do not extend a hub’s advertised battery duration to cameras, Wi-Fi or the whole installation.
What internet speed does Ring Alarm Pro need?
Use the requirements for your attached cameras and simultaneous household traffic rather than a universal broadband threshold. Alarm-only cellular backup and full Backup Internet are different services; verify the compatible plan, data allowance, network connection and power requirements in Ring’s documentation.
