    For years, the Counter-Strike community treated 128-tick as the finish line — the number that would finally close the gap between CS:GO’s standard 64-tick matchmaking and the noticeably crisper feel of 128-tick servers used by third parties like FACEIT. When CS2 launched, Valve had every opportunity to simply raise the number. They didn’t. Every official and third-party CS2 server, including FACEIT, was locked to a hardcoded 64Hz — and Valve built something else instead.

    The System Valve Built Instead of a Bigger Number

    Rather than chasing a higher tick rate, Valve introduced subtick, a system that timestamps your inputs with precision rather than snapping them to the next server update. Every CS2 server updates the game world every 15.625 milliseconds — the fixed 64Hz interval — but subtick records the exact moment you clicked, moved, or threw a grenade within that window, instead of rounding it forward to whenever the next tick happens to land. It’s a genuinely different approach to the same underlying problem 128-tick was trying to solve.

    Why Valve Chose This Over Simply Doubling the Rate

    Does It Actually Work as Well as Real 128-Tick?

    For the overwhelming majority of players, subtick closes most of the practical gap that used to separate CS:GO’s 64-tick from its 128-tick alternative. Some professional players have reported it still feels subtly different from true 128-tick FACEIT servers in the fastest peeking exchanges, but the general consensus is that subtick brings 64-tick CS2 noticeably closer to the old 128-tick experience than 64-tick CS:GO ever managed. What subtick fundamentally cannot do is speed up the trip your input takes to actually reach the server — it removes server-side rounding imprecision, but the network latency between you and that server is a separate problem subtick was never designed to solve.
