Discord can stay on RTC Connecting or No Route while websites and downloads continue working. Those states concern setting up a voice connection; a working web page does not prove that every application path or network policy is suitable for voice.
Start with the exact state, check whether the issue affects one channel or every call, and compare another supported client or permitted network. Do not assume a microphone setting, a faster broadband plan or repeated DNS changes will solve an unidentified connection-stage failure.
Identify whether voice connects at all
Discord’s voice connection error guide groups states including ICE Checking, No Route and RTC Connecting as connection problems. That differs from joining a voice channel successfully but being unable to hear someone.
Record the exact text and when it appears. Is the state permanent, intermittent, or limited to joining one channel? If the connection succeeds and you can see other people speaking, investigate input, output and permissions as a separate branch rather than continuing to describe the problem as No Route.
Check the scope before changing anything
- Check service information. Use Discord’s own status information linked from its support guidance. A reported incident is useful context, but an empty status page does not prove there is no local or partial issue.
- Try another appropriate voice destination. With permission, compare a different channel or call. Avoid repeatedly disrupting an active group session.
- Compare another supported client. For example, compare the desktop application with a supported browser on the same computer. Keep the network unchanged.
- Compare another permitted network if available. Keep the device and client unchanged. Note if the alternative is a phone hotspot because that changes both the network path and any carrier restrictions.
- Record what changed. A simple client-by-network record is more useful than “nothing works,” particularly when only one combination fails.
| Client and network | State to record | What stays the same? |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop app on the usual network | Exact connection state and time | Starting condition |
| Supported browser on the usual network | Connects or the exact error | Device, account and network |
| Same desktop app on another permitted network | Connects or the exact error | Device and client |
This is a blank diagnostic plan, not a test we have performed. Browser permissions and client versions can also differ, so a changed outcome narrows the investigation without identifying one definitive cause.
Keep the same affected account and destination when a comparison allows it. If you change the account, server, client and network together, a successful call tells you much less about which condition mattered.
Investigate the branch your comparison supports
One client fails on the same network
Check that client’s version, permissions and supported settings. Discord’s voice and video troubleshooting guide separates desktop, browser and mobile steps. Use the section that matches the client instead of applying Windows-only instructions to a phone.
If you reset application voice settings, note the previous choices first so you can restore a preferred input or output device. A successful connection afterwards does not prove that a particular network tweak was responsible if several settings changed together.
Different clients fail only on one network
Review any known VPN, proxy, filtering or managed-network policy with the network owner. If you control a VPN, a permitted comparison with it disconnected can be useful; record that choice and restore the configuration afterwards.
For security software, use its supported application-permission process or ask its administrator. Do not broadly disable protection or change a work or school network’s policy just to make a call connect. The useful evidence is which application and network combination fails, not whether every firewall has been switched off.
The call connects but audio is wrong
Follow the input/output, mute, permission and channel checks in Discord’s guide. A selected wrong speaker can produce silence without a network failure. Conversely, a successful microphone test does not prove that a remote voice connection is established.
Use network tests as supporting evidence
A browser internet speed test can describe the shared connection’s capacity to its endpoint. It does not reproduce Discord’s voice setup or certify its media path. Our measurement methods explain why HTTP timing and failures should not be labelled as Discord packet loss.
If many applications or devices also fail, use the Slow Internet Troubleshooter to select a broader check. If voice connects but a high-quality screen share struggles, that is a different task from a connection-state error; the Discord streaming guide provides relevant context.
Escalate with the smallest useful report
Include your operating system, Discord client and version, exact error state, time, affected destinations and the results of the controlled comparisons. Discord’s support guide lists useful client and debugging information. Review logs and screenshots before sharing them, especially in public channels.
Explain whether voice never connected or connected with an audio problem. That distinction, together with the client-by-network record, gives support a much clearer starting point than a speed screenshot alone.
