    Ask someone why their router sits where it sits, and you’ll get some version of the same answer: that’s where the cable guy left it. Not “I chose this spot because it’s central,” not “I thought about coverage.” Just — that’s where the wire happened to come through the wall, so that’s where the router lives now, often for years, often in a corner, a closet, or shoved behind the TV.

    Nobody picked that spot for its coverage. And it shows.

    Why the Default Spot Is Usually the Worst One

    Picture your router’s signal less like a flashlight beam and more like a balloon inflating outward in every direction at once — roughly a sphere of coverage centered on wherever the router sits. Now put that sphere in the corner of your house. Half of it — sometimes more — is radiating uselessly into your front yard, the street, or your neighbor’s living room. The half that’s actually supposed to cover your home is fighting to reach every room on its own, stretched thin.

Not because it sounds nice in theory, but because it’s the single most consistent fix across wildly different homes — apartments, ranch houses, split-levels, doesn’t matter.     Height Matters Almost as Much as Which Room You’re In

    Position isn’t the whole story, though. A router sitting on the floor is fighting furniture, low walls, and — this sounds silly but it’s real — the human bodies walking around the house, all of which soak up signal more than open air does. Get it up off the ground. A shelf, a wall mount, the top of a bookcase, anything that puts it above the everyday clutter of a lived-in home.

    This costs nothing. You’re not buying anything, you’re just moving a box eighteen inches higher, and it consistently makes a real difference. It’s the kind of fix that feels too simple to matter, right up until you actually try it.

    What to Keep Your Router Away From

    Not every wall is an equal obstacle. Concrete, brick, stone — these absorb dramatically more signal than a standard interior drywall partition. A router on the far side of a load-bearing concrete wall from the rest of your home is fighting a losing battle no amount of clever placement within that constraint can fully solve.

    Metal deserves its own warning, because it’s genuinely sneaky. Large appliances, filing cabinets, even a big mirror with a metallic backing — these things reflect and scatter WiFi signal in ways that are easy to overlook, since nobody thinks of a decorative mirror as networking equipment. If a room has always felt inexplicably weak despite being reasonably close to the router, look for a large metal object sitting between the two before blaming anything else.

    And then there’s water, which sounds like a joke until you hear the explanation. A large fish tank sitting in the signal’s path can genuinely weaken it, because water molecules absorb the 2.4GHz frequency efficiently — it’s the exact same physics your microwave relies on to heat food. If you’ve got a large aquarium anywhere between your router and a struggling room, that’s not a coincidence you should ignore.

    What “Central” Actually Looks Like in a Real Home

    In a single-story house, central generally means somewhere near the physical middle of the floor plan, ideally close to wherever the household actually spends its connected time — a home office, the living room with the smart TV, wherever people are actually online the most.

    Multi-story homes add a vertical dimension to the same problem. A router stuck in the basement has to push signal both outward and upward through entire floors of wood, insulation, sometimes concrete slab. Moving it to a middle floor instead of the top or bottom gives it a fighting chance to reach both directions reasonably evenly, rather than having to fight gravity, so to speak, in only one direction.

    Open floor plans are naturally forgiving here — signal travels further with fewer interior walls to fight through. A heavily partitioned house with lots of separate rooms needs more deliberate thought about placement than an open-concept layout would, simply because there’s more stuff in the way no matter where you put the thing.

    When You’ve Done Everything Right and It’s Still Not Enough

    Sometimes a home is just too big, too oddly shaped, or built with too much concrete for one router, positioned perfectly, to cover on its own. That’s not a placement failure — that’s a genuine scale problem, and it’s the point where extending your network with a mesh system or a targeted extender is the actual next step, not more fiddling with where the router sits.
