Cheap, targeted, does the one job you need it to do. Place it roughly halfway between the router and the problem room, not right next to either one.

Trying to patch a whole-home coverage problem with two or three extenders, each creating its own separate network and each cutting bandwidth along the way, tends to produce something worse than either a single router or a proper mesh system — a fragmented, inconsistent mess of overlapping half-networks that’s honestly more annoying to manage than the original dead zone was.

    There’s also a middle scenario worth naming: a moderately sized home with one or two mild weak spots, not full dead zones, just rooms that feel a little slower than the rest. An extender can genuinely handle this fine. Save mesh for when the coverage problem is structural, not just one unlucky room.
