Cloudflare Speed Test
Cloudflare operates a distributed network used for content delivery and security. A speed test using its endpoints measures the connection between your browser and the Cloudflare location reached by your network at that time. That is a useful measurement, but it does not represent every website, streaming service or game server.
Our Instant Speed Test transfers test data to and from Cloudflare endpoints. The site uses its own measurement controller, so its timing and calculation choices can differ from Cloudflare’s own speed.cloudflare.com tool. Neither result guarantees the speed of a different destination.
Why Cloudflare for Speed Testing?
The test endpoint, network route and measurement method all affect results. These are the factors to consider when interpreting a Cloudflare-based speed test:
| Factor | Cloudflare Speed Test | Traditional Speed Tests |
|---|---|---|
| Server Network | Cloudflare’s distributed edge network | Varies by provider and hosting partner |
| Server Proximity | Determined by network routing and availability | Often selected automatically; some offer manual choice |
| Real-World Accuracy | Measures the path to the selected Cloudflare endpoint | Measures the path to each selected test endpoint |
| ISP Gaming | A result alone does not establish traffic prioritization | A result alone does not establish traffic prioritization |
| Cost | Our browser test is free to use | Costs, apps and advertising vary |
| Privacy | Review the test provider and site’s privacy policies | Review each provider’s collection and retention policies |
How Our Cloudflare Speed Test Works
When you click START on our speed test, here’s exactly what happens behind the scenes:
- Server selection — Your requests reach a Cloudflare endpoint according to network routing. This does not guarantee the physically closest city or a server within a particular distance.
- Download test — After a warm-up, the browser measures sustained downloads across multiple HTTP transfers, checking received data and timing rather than reporting a momentary peak as the final speed.
- Upload test — The browser sends data to the endpoint and uses successful completed requests to estimate upload throughput. Upload capacity matters for video calls, live streaming and cloud backups.
- Ping measurement — Small HTTPS requests estimate response time to the test endpoint. This includes browser and HTTP overhead; it is not an ICMP ping or a measurement of your game server.
- Jitter calculation — The variation between consecutive ping measurements is calculated. Low jitter means a stable, consistent connection.
Allow the download and upload stages to finish. The current controller measures each direction for at least eight seconds after warm-up and can take longer on variable connections. It uses data, so check your allowance on a metered plan. A failed or inconclusive test should be retried rather than treated as a complete measurement.
Cloudflare Speed Test vs Others
| Speed Test | Powered By | Ads | App Required | Metrics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instant Speed Test | Custom controller using Cloudflare endpoints | Site includes advertising integrations | No | Download, Upload, HTTP Ping, Jitter |
| Speedtest.net (Ookla) | Ookla test-server network | Depends on product and settings | Browser option available | Download, Upload, Latency; other metrics vary by client |
| Fast.com | Netflix servers | Ad-free test interface | No | Download; Upload and Latency under Show more info |
| Google Speed Test | M-Lab NDT where offered | Depends on interface | No | Download, Upload, Latency |
| speed.cloudflare.com | Cloudflare | Test-focused interface | No | Download, Upload, Latency, Jitter and other supported metrics |
Cloudflare endpoints let us offer a browser-based test without operating our own worldwide server fleet. Results depend on the route, your device and the measurement method. This site uses analytics and advertising integrations; no account is required to run the test.
What Cloudflare’s Network Powers
Cloudflare provides several kinds of internet infrastructure. These services explain why its endpoints can be a useful additional diagnostic destination:
- Content delivery and security — Distributed services help websites deliver content and protect applications.
- Application services — Websites and online services can use different combinations of Cloudflare products.
- DNS resolver — Cloudflare operates the public 1.1.1.1 DNS service; DNS lookup speed is separate from download throughput.
- DDoS protection — Its network provides services designed to mitigate denial-of-service attacks.
- Edge computing — Cloudflare Workers runs applications on its distributed network.
A connection to a Cloudflare test endpoint can differ from the route to your streaming provider or game server. Use it alongside application-specific diagnostics when a particular service is slow.
How to Get the Best Results from Your Test
- Use Ethernet for accuracy — WiFi adds overhead that doesn’t reflect your true ISP speed. Plug in for the most accurate results.
- Close other tabs and apps — Background activity skews results. Close everything before testing.
- Test multiple times — Run 3-5 tests and average the results. Individual tests can vary based on momentary network conditions.
- Test at different times — Morning vs evening results reveal network congestion patterns.
- Compare results — If your Cloudflare speed test results are significantly below your ISP plan, you may need to troubleshoot or contact your provider.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Cloudflare speed test more accurate than Ookla?
Neither is universally more accurate. They can use different endpoints, routes, transfer patterns and calculations. Repeat both on the same device under comparable conditions, and check the selected endpoints before interpreting a difference.
Why does our speed test use Cloudflare instead of its own servers?
Using Cloudflare endpoints lets us provide a free browser test without maintaining our own global server fleet. Our controller is separate from Cloudflare’s own test, and results can differ because the methods and current network conditions differ.
Does my ISP know I’m running a Cloudflare speed test?
Your ISP can generally observe destination IP addresses and traffic patterns, even when HTTPS encrypts the contents. Using Cloudflare does not make a speed test invisible or prove that traffic cannot be identified or prioritized. A difference between tests is not, on its own, evidence of intentional manipulation.
Can I use this speed test on any device?
Yes — our Instant Speed Test works in any modern web browser on any device: desktop, laptop, tablet, phone, smart TV. No app installation or account creation needed. Just open the page and click START.
Why are my Cloudflare speed test results different from Ookla?
Different endpoints, routes, congestion levels, test durations and connection counts can produce different speeds. There is no fixed percentage difference that is normal for every connection, and neither result automatically describes every online activity. Repeat the comparison and record the device, time, endpoint and settings.
