Why Regional Distance Still Sets a Hard Floor

Light in fiber-optic cable travels at roughly 200,000 km/s — slower than in a vacuum because of the glass's refractive index. That sets a physical minimum: a round trip across 3,000km of fiber can't drop below about 30ms no matter how good your ISP is, before routing overhead is even added. Real-world ping is always higher than this theoretical floor because traffic rarely travels in a straight line — it hops between exchange points, and each hop adds a few milliseconds. This is exactly why testing multiple regions matters more than testing one: your ISP's "nearest" region on paper isn't always the one with the shortest actual path. Pair this test with a packet loss and jitter check for the full picture — low ping with high jitter still causes stutter and dropped frames.

Why is my ping different to every region?

Ping is a function of physical distance plus network routing, not your internet speed. A 1Gbps connection and a 20Mbps connection can show the exact same ping to the same region, because bandwidth (how much data moves) and latency (how fast a single round trip completes) are unrelated metrics. Regions physically closer to you, or with more direct fiber routes, will always show lower ping than distant ones — no amount of bandwidth upgrades changes that.

Should I always connect to the region with the lowest ping?

For latency-sensitive tasks — competitive gaming, video calls, remote desktop — yes, the lowest-ping region is almost always the right choice. For general browsing or streaming, it matters far less, since those tolerate 100–150ms without any noticeable impact. If you're choosing a VPN exit point or a cloud hosting region for a specific service, weigh ping against where that service's actual servers live — the fastest region to you isn't useful if the content you need is hosted somewhere else entirely.
