    Buy a router today and you’ll find WiFi 6, WiFi 6E, and WiFi 7 all sitting on the same shelf, sometimes from the same brand, often at wildly different prices for boxes that look nearly identical. The generational naming makes it feel like WiFi 7 must simply be “better” and WiFi 6 must be “outdated,” and that instinct is wrong often enough to cost people real money on hardware they didn’t need.

    WiFi 6: Not Outdated, Just Not the Newest Anymore

    WiFi 6 — the 802.11ax standard, if you want the technical name — introduced something called OFDMA, which lets a router talk to multiple devices at once on the same channel far more efficiently than older standards managed. Older WiFi handled devices more sequentially, essentially one conversation at a time. In a house full of connected gadgets — phones, laptops, a dozen smart home devices all chattering away — this efficiency gain often matters more day to day than WiFi 6’s headline speed numbers ever will.

    Despite the name suggesting a real generational leap, WiFi 6E is technically identical to WiFi 6 under the hood — same 802.11ax foundation. When it opened, this band had essentially zero existing WiFi traffic on it, which means a meaningfully cleaner slice of airspace than the increasingly crowded 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands most homes, and most of their neighbors, have been piling onto for years.

    WiFi 7: The First Genuine Architectural Shake-Up

    WiFi 7 is where things actually change structurally, not just incrementally. Its headline feature — Multi-Link Operation, or MLO — fundamentally rewrites how a device talks to the router. Every previous standard locks a device onto one band at a time. If that band hits interference or gets congested, you eat the consequences until your device happens to switch. WiFi 7 devices can transmit across multiple bands at the same time, so if one band runs into trouble, traffic shifts to another instantly, with no reconnection lag you’d ever notice.

    It also doubles the maximum channel width available — from 160 MHz on WiFi 6E up to 320 MHz — and introduces 4096-QAM modulation, a step up from WiFi 6’s 1024-QAM, cramming roughly 20% more data into every single transmission. Stack all of that together and WiFi 7’s theoretical ceiling is several times higher than WiFi 6E’s. Whether you actually see any of that in practice depends entirely on whether your devices support the same features the router does.

    Why the Big Numbers Rarely Show Up in Real Life

    Those headline WiFi 7 speed figures assume perfect conditions and fully matched hardware on both ends. As of right now, in 2026, actual client device support for WiFi 7 is still mostly limited to recent flagship phones and a handful of newer laptops. Pair a WiFi 7 router with an older laptop that only speaks WiFi 6, and that connection simply runs at WiFi 6 speeds — the router’s higher ceiling does nothing for a device that can’t reach it.

    This is exactly why Multi-Link Operation, not the peak speed number, tends to be the feature that actually matters for households that do upgrade. It shows up as fewer weird lag spikes and better consistency in a busy, device-heavy home — a reliability win you feel, not a bigger number you brag about.

    What Actually Makes Sense to Buy

    Standard household on a normal internet plan, reasonable number of devices? WiFi 6 remains the smart, cost-effective pick, full stop. Living somewhere dense with a lot of competing networks, or running a genuinely crowded smart home? WiFi 6E’s access to clean 6GHz spectrum is worth the moderate price bump. Multi-gigabit internet plan, or buying hardware you want to still feel current in five years? That’s when WiFi 7 actually earns its premium. Outside of those specific situations, you’re mostly paying for headroom your current devices can’t use yet.
